About IAM

OUTSCALE’s Identity Access Management (IAM) is the service that oversees the authentication and authorization to access and use all resources of the OUTSCALE Cloud.

Two types of identities, or credentials, can access and use resources in the OUTSCALE Cloud:

  • The root user, which is the default identity that is automatically created with an OUTSCALE account and has unrestricted permissions on all resources of the account.

  • EIM users, which are created and owned by the root user and which may have restricted permissions. For more information, see About Your Identity.

To access and use the resources of the OUTSCALE Cloud, each of these identities must first authenticate. This can be done using various methods, with various degrees of security. For more information, see About Authentication.

Access to the resources of the account should be controlled through authorization management. This includes creating and applying policies to EIM users to restrict their allowed actions, gathering EIM users into EIM groups to make policy management easier, or creating API access rules to restrict access to the API from your OUTSCALE account. For more information, see Managing Your Authorizations.
